A Very Special Visit On Saturday, May 29, 2004, the folks at Alligator Bayou hosted a special visit from the children of Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge.

Thirty guests from Cancer Services came for a morning full of entertainment and fun out in the swamps. More


Summer has arrived in south Louisiana and our tours are well underway. We are offering our sunset tours almost daily each with their own unique adventure.

Our Saturday morning tour usually start around 10:00 am with the wake-up calls of our natural world. Experience the beauty of the morning swamp as many birds take to the skies in their early morning errands. It will seem like morning rush hour traffic... More



Nature Sculpts The Wetlands

Geology & Hydrology of the Spanish Lake Basin

Geologic and hydrologic forces shaped the Spanish Lake Basin, a "bowl" of soil and water sculpted by rivers weathering and eroding the land over tens of thousands of years. Beginning 100,000 years ago, river systems built up a high terrace in the area of the Spanish Lake Basin and carved the valley that later became the Basin. Later, the salty waters of the Gulf of Mexico entered the valley and, as sea levels dropped, it filled with sediment again.

In addition to the 7 creatures who make up our two-legged

staff, there are numerous other individuals who are essential to the energy here at Alligator Bayou. It is with these guys and girls that we love to spend our time and they think we are ok too.

Boo & Echo: Our resident nutrias. Boo is a 2-year-old nutria we got from the swamp as a baby.
