In 1998, on a clear, sunny day, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries dropped by with 24 baby 'gators to be released in Bluff Swamp. Only a few feet in length, the critters skittered into the swampwater faster than we could call out, "Welcome home!" They are part of Bluff Swamp Wildlife Refuge's ongoing attempt to replenish its gator population, which has historically been shot out by folks who don't yet realize that this a wildlife refuge--a protected area that's home to endangered and threatened species. |
