Bobcat Restoration
One of the most fascinating exhibits at Alligator Bayou is its distinctive, unique bobcat habitat. It covers an acre and a half, with a pond, a hollow old-growth log, a mound and a cave sculpted by artist Craig Black.
Our habitat houses two adult bobcats, Brad and Bobette.
Brad was found on the side of the road in 2005 and initially cared for by Toni Haydel Spillman, a member of one of the oldest families in Bluff Swamp. His rear left leg had been shattered by a car, but a year later, in April of 2006, he was released into his new habitat, which was built especially for him in memory of Toni's mother, Verna Edmonston Haydel. Brad has made a remarkable recovery, but because of his injury he cannot be returned to the wild.
Bobette was given to Wings of Hope Rehabilitation Center as a young kitten that had been taken from her mother to be made a pet. Although cute, wild animals do not make pets - the owner reported "food aggression" - a natural trait in predators. The human interaction she did receive meant that she, like Brad, could not be released into the wild.
Illegal poaching and misunderstanding can threaten the survival of this magnificent native wildcat and led to our bobcat restoration effort. Predators are one of the most important links in the balance of nature.
